As you can see from the "heat map" image of a Google page, a new eye tracking study has confirmed that organic seach results (the websites listed on the left side of the screen) are proven to offer more traffic to a website than paid or "sponsored" listings. The red and orange colors indicate where most of the eye movement was; where the searches looked the most upon seeing the Google search results page. For instance, when a searcher Google searches a keyword, say, "digital cameras," the overwhelming majority of people searching that keyword will look at the left hand side of the page in the "organic" listings. Based on this study that tracks searchers' eye movements in real time, the following results were discovered:
Organic, AKA Free or Natural listings that appear on the left:
- Websites 1 through 3 are viewed 100% of the time
- Website 4 is seen 85% of the time
- Website 5 is viewed 75% of the time
Incidentally, the Pay Per Click websites showing up at the very top on the right side of the page are only seen up to 50% of the time, and each listing below the first one drops in visibility by 10%.
To summarize, unless your website is on the first page of a major search engine on the lefthand side, your business will literally be missing out an a huge amount of traffic, and therefore sales.
